Evaluation of the Association Between Serotonin and Bone Mineral Density in Patients with Neuroendocrine Tumors

Introduction: Bone mineral density (BMD) and fractures are influenced by diet, activity, drugs and hormones. Recent studies highlight an inverse relationship between serotonin and BMD.
Aim(s): Two-centre investigation of the relationship between serotonin metabolites and BMD in patients with sporadic NETs with and without carcinoid syndrome.
Materials and methods: One-year prospective audit, patients undergoing DXA-scans as standard care for chronic malignancy. Following exclusions for confounders, there were 47 subjects (24 females, 59.1±16.0yrs, BMI 26.8±4.9, 23 males, 66.6±9.2yrs BMI 27.3±4.3): 32 gastrointestinal, 10 pancreatic, three pulmonary, and two other NETs. Forty (85.1%) had carcinoid syndrome.
