In Vitro Anticancer Effect of Metformin on Neuroendocrine Tumor Cells


Introduction: Patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) type 1 develop pancreatic NETs as well as bronchus carcinoids. No prophylactic drug is available yet. Metformin has been reported to act on the AMPK/mTOR signalling pathway and exhibit antitumoral activity in several cancer cell lines.

Aim(s): To characterize a potential role for metformin as a prophylactic antitumoral drug in MEN-1 patients.

Materials and methods: Human pancreatic neuroendocrine BON1 cells and bronchopulmonary H727 cells were treated with different concentrations of metformin (0.1mM – 10mM) and the effects on cell viability and various signaling pathways (Western Blot) were examined.
