Neuroendocrine Tumors: An Australian Experience

Introduction: Neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) in Australia are rare, but are rising in incidence.

Aim(s): We aim to identify the incidence, treatment and outcomes of patients with a low to intermediate grade NET between 2008 and 2013 in the Hunter New England area, NSW, Australia which incorporates metropolitan and rural communities.

Materials and methods: We reviewed all patients who were diagnosed with NETs between January 2008 and December 2012. Patient data was extracted from the local Cancer Clinical Registry. Patients included were those diagnosed with a NET of the lung, gastrointestinal tract, pancreas or hepatobiliary system. Only low to intermediate grade lung carcinoid tumours were included. Overall survival was retrospectively analysed.
