The Use of Guar Gum in the Medical Management of Hyperinsulinaemic Hypoglycaemia

Introduction: Medical therapy, including guar gum, is frequently required in the management of patients with endogenous hyperinsulinaemic hypoglycaemia (e.g. insulinoma), especially if surgery is not appropriate.

Aim(s): We discuss the mechanism of action and use of guar gum in this context, illustrated by a case of insulinoma in pregnancy.

Materials and methods: A 31-year-old female with a history of fasting hypoglycaemia became pregnant during the investigation of a suspected insulinoma. Guar gum was used successfully throughout the pregnancy to alleviate hypoglycaemia, and the patient delivered a healthy baby.
