The 2000 WHO classification had poor prognostic power in well-differentiated (WD) neoplasms which led to the introduction of two new important parameters: grade and stage, by ENETS; the former became part of the new 2010 WHO classification.

#118 Gastrointestinal motility in patients with neuroendocrine tumors
Introduction: Diarrhea is the most common symptom in patients with intestinal neuroendocrine tumors (NET). Somatostatin analogues reduce stool frequency and may increase gastrointestinal transit time (GITT). Motility tracking system® MTS-1 (MTS) (Motilis, Switzerland) is a novel, safe, almost non-invasive and easy-to-perform method for description of gastrointestinal motility.

#421 Pelvic Carcinoid Tumor Recurrence Treated by Laparosocopic Ultrasonography Guided Laparoscopic Resection
Introduction: Minute retroperitoneal carcinoid tumor recurrences may be difficult to locate during surgery. A laparoscopic approach to re-resection is further hampered by the lack of tactile sense. Laparoscopic Ultrasonography (LUS) is a minimally invasive method which may compensate for the lack of palpation during laparoscopic surgery, and LUS allows for an evaluation of lesions beneath the visible surfaces. LUS is used in the pretherapeutic staging of upper GI tract cancer, and LUS can identify - and if necessary also biopsy - lesions less than 10 mm in diameter.

Introduction: Monoclonal antibody (mAb) inhibitors of immune checkpoints, including anti–PD-1 and anti–PD-L1, have become established treatment options in various solid tumors. However, there is a paucity of data on treatment effect of checkpoint inhibition in neuroendocrine tumors (NET) and neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC). PDR001 is a high-affinity, humanized IgG4 mAb directed against PD-1 that blocks the binding of PD-L1 and PD-L2 to PD-1.

#2129 Phosphohistone H3 (PHH3) Immunohistochemical Staining Outperforms Conventional H&E Mitotic Count in Classifying Pulmonary Carcinoids
Introduction: Pulmonary carcinoids (PC) are well-differentiated NETs and are classified as typical carcinoid (TC) and atypical carcinoid (AC). Despite the fact that TC and AC exhibit significant differences in patient survival, their classification depends on relatively subtle differences in mitotic count (MC). Although careful counting of mitotic figures (MF) is essential, it is a very subjective task, time-consuming and lacks of sensitivity and interobserver reproducibility, due to selection bias of the hot spots, heterogeneous distribution of MF, difficulty in distinguishing MF from similar chromatin changes (i.e. in apoptotic cells or due to crush, karyorrhectic debris, pyknosis or apoptosis).
