#429 Bronchial Carcinoid Response to mTOR Inhibitors Depends on mTOR Expression Levels
Introduction: Bronchial carcinoids (BCs), originating from endocrine cells dispersed in the respiratory epithelium, can be divided into typical (TBC) and atypical (ABC). TBC are less aggressive, smaller, and much less likely to metastasize, while ABC are more aggressive and metastasize. mTOR has a central role in regulating cell growth, metabolism, and apoptosis. A differential mTOR activation in BCs has been previously demonstrated, suggesting that mTOR pathway might play a predictive role in patients eligible for mTOR-targeted therapies

#680 Role of EGF Pathway in Regulating Bronchial Carcinoid Cell Proliferation
Introduction: Bronchial carcinoids (BC) are rare neuroendocrine tumors. Surgery is not feasible for infiltrating and metastatic disease. Medical therapy is often tried but is represented by chemotherapy and radiation, while somatostatin analogues are employed for symptomatic control. It is necessary to identify new molecules capable of providing medical treatment in cases for which surgical removal is not feasible. EGF, TGFα are growth factors which were demonstrated to be important in neuroendocrine tumors. EGF and TGFα bind to the EGF receptor and lead to the transcription of genes that regulate cell proliferation.

Introduction: Bronchial carcinoids (BC) are rare tumors originating from endocrine cells dispersed in the respiratory epithelium. The main BC treatment is surgery, but which is not feasible for large, infiltrating and metastatic disease. In these settings, medical therapy is often tried. Therefore it is important to identify new therapeutic targets and new molecules capable of providing adequate medical treatment for patients with BC. Sunitinib is an oral, small-molecule, multi-targeted receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor.

We previously demonstrated that the typical BC human cell line NCI-H727 is sensitive to Everolimus, in terms of cell viability reduction, while the atypical human BC cell line NCI-H720 is not. However, the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon have not been fully clarified.

#986 Expression of the Truncated Somatostatin Receptor Variant Sstr5TMD4 in Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma
Introduction: Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is a rare tumor originating from thyroid parafollicular C cell. The only available treatment is surgical resection, which is not always feasible. Somatostatin and its receptors are expressed both in normal human thyroid C cells and in MTC, but their role has not been fully elucidated. The discovery of a truncated isoform of Sstr5, Sstr5TMD4, associated with increased invasiveness and aggressiveness in breast cancer, has opened new insight in the role of Sstr in cancers.

Introduction: NETs are rare neoplasms arising from neuroendocrine cells spread in the respiratory and gastro-entero-pancreatic epithelium. The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway plays a central role in the regulation of cell growth, metabolism, and apoptosis representing a novel molecular target. This pathway is constitutively activated in pancreatic NETs (pNETs) providing the basis for the development of specific mTOR inhibitors as new therapeutic tools.

#1089 Role of TGF beta-1 in Regulating Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Cell Viability
Introduction: Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are heterogeneous neoplasms arising from neuroendocrine cells spread in the respiratory and gastro-entero-pancreatic epithelium. The role of transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF b-1) in NET biology is largely unknown. TGF b-1 signaling pathway is tumor suppressive in most non-transformed epithelial cell lines. In contrast, many human carcinomas are refractory to the growth–inhibitory effects of TGF b-1.
