#108 Everolimus (RAD001) induces tumor response in patients with medullary thyroid cancer: an in vivo and in vitro study
Introduction: Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is a neuroendocrine tumor (NET) of the thyroid C cells which is known to express somatostatin receptors. Octreotide, a somatostatin analogue exerting both antisecretory and antitumor activity in different types of NETs, has shown low efficacy in MTC. Everolimus (RAD001), an inhibitor of mTOR, has shown antitumor effects in patients with NETs and synergistic effects when combined with octreotide. Until recently, RAD001 has never been evaluated in MTC.

#670 The Relationship Between the Ki-67 Protein and IGF-Related Genes in Gastroenteropancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Patients with Normal and Elevated Serum Chromogranin-A
Introduction: GEP-NETs are rare, heterogeneous neoplasms with a distinct biological and clinical behavior. Both IGF-system and Ki-67 indices have been reported as important stimulating factors in carcinogenesis and/or tumor progression. The tumor marker CgA is an independent predictor for survival as well. Currently no data are available about a possible interaction between IGF-system (IGF(-R)s, IRs, BPs) and Ki-67 protein in GEP-NET patients with normal and elevated serum CgA.

#780 Epigenetic Regulation of Endogenous Somatostatin Expression in Neuroendocrine Tumors
Introduction: Somatostatin (SST) can regulate hormone secretion and cell proliferation in neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). SST expression levels in NETs likely differ between patients. DNA methylation inhibits gene transcription and can be reversed by the demethylating drug 5-aza-2-deoxycytidine (AZA).
