#1150 Platelet Serotonin But Not Dopamine Concentrations Are Lower in Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor and Renal Cell Carcinoma Patients Compared to Healthy Individuals.
Introduction: Platelets carry VEGF-A, serotonin and dopamine. Serotonin stimulates and dopamine inhibits tumor angiogenesis. We hypothesized that platelets are activated in tumor vasculature and release angiogenic factors, resulting in lower platelet serotonin and dopamine.

Introduction: Microsphere radioembolization is a method of delivering radiation therapy directly to tumors, thereby minimizing toxicity to adjacent structures. Introduction: Neuroendocrine tumors demonstrate heterogeneous behavior based upon site of origin and specific histology. Even after controlling for anatomic location, disease stage and histologic grade, registry studies show persistent diversity of outcome in patients with midgut carcinoid.

#131 Efficacy and safety results from a Phase II study of pasireotide (SOM230) in the treatment of patients with metastatic NETs refractory or resistant to octreotide LAR
Introduction: Pasireotide, a multi-receptor targeted somatostatin analogue, has 30-, 5- and 39-fold greater affinity for sst1,3 and sst5 receptors, respectively, and a slightly lower affinity for sst2, than octreotide. Because of this multi-receptor binding profile, pasireotide may be effective in controlling symptoms of carcinoid syndrome in patients with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) who are no longer responsive to currently available somatostatin analogues.

#148 Near-complete regression of liver metastatic lesions in a patient with advanced pancreatic gastrinoma in response to somatostatin analogue therapy following cytoreductive surgery
Introduction: Although the majority of pancreatic NETs present with hepatic metastases, surgery with curative intent should be the first consideration. Cytoreductive surgery by resection of primary and secondary deposits may be of value in achieving local or endocrine symptoms control.

#160 The role of T-type calcium channels in medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC): T-type calcium channel blockers inhibit hormone secretion and induce apoptotic cell death in a human MTC cell line
Introduction: Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) accounts for approximately 5-10% of thyroid cancers. In the case of tumors limited to the thyroid gland, the prognosis is generally favorable, whereas 5-year survival averages only 40% in patients with metastatic disease. In these patients, conventional chemotherapy only occasionally leads to a complete response and partial responses are observed in less than 30% of the cases. Therefore, intense efforts are currently directed toward the identification of new druggable targets for the treatment of this devastating disease.
