#122 Molecular genetic findings in gastric carcinoid suggest possible neurofibromin/Ras pathway involvement in carcinoid pathogenesis
Introduction: The molecular pathogenesis of gastrointestinal carcinoid tumours is poorly understood. We have been undertaking molecular genetic investigations of a young woman with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) in whom a gastric carcinoid tumor was detected following an episode of gastrointestinal bleeding. She was otherwise relatively mildly affected by NF1. In NF1, gastric carcinoids have been found previously only in patients with other predisposing factors, which were absent in this patient.

#430 mTOR Inhibitors Hamper Cell Viability in Selected Human Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma Primary Cultures
Introduction: It has been demonstrated that mTOR inhibitors have potent anti-proliferative effects in a human Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma (MTC) cell line. We here explore the possible role of mTOR inhibitors, Everolimus and BEZ235 (which also inhibits the PI3K pathway) on the effects of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1) in human MTC primary cultures.

#1111 Autophagy as a Possible Mechanism of Resistance in pNET Treatment
Introduction: Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor (pNET) patients often display primary or secondary resistance to Sunitinib, an anti-angiogenic multi-receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor which has been approved for the treatment of late stage pNETs. In late cancer stage autophagy often has a tumor promoting role. Sunitinib might additionally activate autophagy through inhibition of mTOR or induction of hypoxia.

#2249 Pasireotide as a Possible Tool for the Control of Refractory Hyperinsulinemic Hypoglycemia from Malignant Insulinoma
Introduction: The control of hypoglycemic hyperinsulinemic syndrome from malignant insulinoma is challenging because it is often refractory to diazoxide and somatostatin analogues (SA). Everolimus can have side effects that can limit its use. Pasireotide, a multi-receptor-targeted SA with a high binding affinity to SSTR1 and SSTR5, exhibits a strong inhibitory effect of insulin secretion.

Introduction: Neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) have been found to overexpress somatostatin receptors (SSTRs), which led to the development of somatostatin analogs utilized for diagnostics and therapeutics. However, around 30% of all NETs do not respond to somatostatin based approaches, leading to an interest to find and characterize alternative cell surface targets.
