Introduction: Downregulation of tumor suppressor genes, evasion from apoptosis, and reduced differentiation are hallmarks of cancer that can be due to abnormal epigenetic control. Histone deacetylase (HDAC) is an enzyme involved in the deacetylation of histone proteins, resulting in chromatin remodelling and altered gene transcription. HDAC inhibitors are emerging as useful anticancer drugs.

Introduction: Two main biochemical markers, plasma chromogranin A (CgA) and urinary 5 hydroxy-indoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) are used to aid staging and monitoring of patients with neuroendocrine (NET) tumors. Somatostatin analogues (SSA) such as octreotide and lanreotide have been used to alleviate symptoms and disease progression in NET patients. This study evaluates the use of CgA and 5HIAA in monitoring NET patients on SSA therapy at Newcastle NHS Foundation Trust.

Introduction: GEP-NETs are a heterogeneous group of cancers more common in the small intestine which are usually asymptomatic. In patients with malignant carcinoids, a number of tumor markers (TMs) have been considered enclosing urinary 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid (5-HIAA), chromogranin A (CgA), and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) serum levels measurements. Unfortunately, the sensitivity of each TM largely depends on disease extent and the presence of functioning tumors, and thus their usefulness is still unclear.
