#2058 On-going Evaluation of the Use of Resources and the Costs (UR/C) Associated with Controlled or Uncontrolled Carcinoid Syndrome (CS) in Patients (pts) with Neuroendocrine Tumours (NETs): RECOSY Study Design
Introduction: NET pts have high rates of mortality and morbidity, as wells as decreased health-related quality of life (HRQoL) due to CS. Though there is little research on the economic impact of CS, recent studies show that some symptoms, i.e. diarrhoea, are associated with higher healthcare expenditure and use of resources.

#728 NETworking-The First Three Years of the World NET Cancer Awareness Day Alliance
Introduction: Neuroendocrine tumors have an incidence of 3-5/100,000 per year, however, many patients are diagonosed late in their clinical course resulting in poor outcomes and early death. Raising awareness of the myriad presenting symptoms with resultant early diagnosis is a priority health care initiative for this disease. In 2010, the World NET Cancer Day Awareness (WNCAD) Alliance was formed with the primary mission to raise awareness of neuroendocrine tumors and promote November 10 as World NET Cancer Awareness Day

#48 Preliminary report of the use of everolimus in a patient with progressive medullary thyroid carcinoma
Introduction: Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) accounts for about 5-10% of all thyroid cancers, and while disease localized to the thyroid can be cured by surgery, there is no effective treatment for disseminated MTC. Constitutive activation of the RET proto-oncogene is implicated in familial and a proportion of sporadic cases, and up-regulates the AKT/PI3-kinase/mTOR signal transduction pathway. Recent studies have shown that the inhibitor of mTOR, everolimus (RAD001, Novartis, Basel), can inhibit the proliferation of the TT cell line and human MTC tumor cells in vitro. Clinically, everolimus has been shown to attenuate the progression of some gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors, but its clinical use in MTC has not yet been evaluated.

#386 A Prospective Evaluation of the Effects of Chronic Proton Pump Inhibitor Use on Plasma Biomarker Levels in Humans
Introduction: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are used primarily to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease. PPI-induced achlorhydria increases circulating gastrin and chromogranin A (CGA). CGA is a widely used biomarker for the diagnosis and follow-up for gut-based neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). PPI-induced increases in CGA or gastrin may falsely suggest the presence of a NET when none exists. Pancreastatin, a fragment of CGA, is also commonly used to diagnose and follow NETs.

#34 Plasma Chromogranin A(CgA) and Urinary 5 Hydroxy-indoleacetic acid(5-HIAA) use in monitoring somatostatin analogue(SSA) therapy at Newcastle NHS Foundation Trust
Introduction: Two main biochemical markers, plasma chromogranin A (CgA) and urinary 5 hydroxy-indoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) are used to aid staging and monitoring of patients with neuroendocrine (NET) tumors. Somatostatin analogues (SSA) such as octreotide and lanreotide have been used to alleviate symptoms and disease progression in NET patients. This study evaluates the use of CgA and 5HIAA in monitoring NET patients on SSA therapy at Newcastle NHS Foundation Trust.

#138 The use of F-18-FDG-PET for patients with neuroendocrine tumors
Introduction: Neoplastic tissue exhibits high glucose utilization, which can be imaged by 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET). Whether FDG-PET is useful for neuroendocrine (NE) tumors, however, is questionable, due to the slow growth rate often observed in these tumors.
