Bertram Wiedenmann

Professor Bertram Wiedenmann, M.D., Ph.D. is Professor of Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, one of the largest university hospitals in Europe.

In addition to being Treasurer of ENETS since 2008, he served 2004-2006 as ENETS first Chairman. Prof. Wiedenmann was originally part of the scientific and medical task force which founded ENETS in 2004. Since then he has also initiated the ENETS Centers of Excellence and developed the CoE Excellence Academy Fellowship Program.  
He is also a member of several international and national societies, including the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO).

In 1985, following his discovery of synaptophysin, his scientific interests focused on translational research in gastrointestinal oncology, specifically neuroendocrine tumor disease of the gastroenteropancreatic system. He is an assistant Editor of the official ENETS journal, Neuroendocrinology.  He has published in numerous leading scientific journals and member of several Editorial Boards.

Prof. Wiedenmann obtained his MD and PhD from the Technical University Medical School, Munich, in 1980, and received a Fulbright Research Fellowship in Haematology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, NY, USA (1980-1982). Following a German Research Council fellowship in cell biology at the Biological Laboratories at Harvard University (1982-1983), he was a research fellow at the German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg, Germany (1983-1984). He qualified as Internist and Gastroenterologist in 1988 and 1989, respectively, and, in 1993, became Full Professor in Gastroenterology at the Free University Medical School in Berlin and in 1997 Head of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the Charite Medical School in Berlin. Since 2012, he also is Medical Director of the CharitéCenter for Internal Medicine incl. Gastroenterology and Nephrology (CC13) of the Charité.

From September 1st, 2015, he will be Congress President of the Annual Conference 2016 of the German Society of Gastroenterology (DGVS).
