Immunohistochemical Analysis of Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition Markers in Neuroendocrine Tumors of the Lung

Introduction: The increased motility and invasiveness of cancer cells in the first phase of metastasis are reminiscent of epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) during embryonic development.

Aim(s): To elucidate the role of EMT regulators: Snail, Slug, Twist and FoxC2 and the subsequent repression of E-cadherin in NETs of the lung.

Materials and methods: The study population consisted of 135 patients diagnosed with pulmonary NETs between 1990-2009. The diagnosis of NETs of the lung was based on morphologic criteria according to the most recent WHO classification. Tumors included 40 SCLCs, 18 LCNECs, 10 ACs and 66 TCs. EMT regulators and cadherins expression were immunohistochemically evaluated.
