Long-term follow-up analysis of lung carcinoid tumors: retrospective monoinstitutional evaluation

#98

Introduction: Detection of prognostic factors of bronchopulmonary carcinoid (BPCs) tumors is complicated due to the rare frequency of this malignancy.

Aim(s): The presentation of the experience of Istituto Nazionale Tumori of Milan. The follow-up and clinical outcome of BPCs subtypes are evaluated.

Materials and methods: From 1986 to 2009, 91 consecutive patients (pts) of lung carcinoids were diagnosed. There were 66 (72.5%) typical carcinoids (TCs) and 25 (27.5%) atypical carcinoids (ACs). The histological subtypes were classified according to the 1999 Travis-WHO classification criteria by experienced pathologists from our Institution. Concomitant pathologies including hypertension (25 patients), diabetes mellitus (10 patients) and cardiovascular diseases (four patients) were also documented. In only four cases were carcinoid syndrome with flushing and diarrhea frequent.
