Dr. Julia Drewes (photo left) opened Session 7 with her talk “Microbes, Microbiota and Cancer”. She described the role of the human microbiome in the initiation, progression and treatment of cancer. There is currently a lack of microbiome studies in neuroendocrine tumor disease and her talk may serve as an inspiration for future research.
Dr. Christina Thirlwell (photo center) gave a talk entitled “Epigenetics and Potential Drug Pathways for Bronchopulmonary- and Gastroenteropancreatic-Neuroendocrine Tumors” and presented data that highlight the importance of epigenetic deregulation in neuroendocrine tumorigenesis. Epigenetic directed therapy has shown promising results in vitro and is currently investigated in clinical trials.
Dr. Stefan Fröhling (photo right) presented the “Molecularly Aided Stratification for Tumor Eradication Research” clinical trial that use a comprehensive molecular profiling to assign patients to the most appropriate treatment. 91 patients with neuroendocrine tumor have been included and preliminary data show encouraging results in selected patients.
