Nucleophosmin Expression and Relocation in Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors: Preliminary Data

Introduction: Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs) are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms with unpredictable clinical course and biological behavior. Nucleophosmin (NPM) is an important multifunctional protein mainly located in the nucleolus. NPM has been reported to be overexpressed in many types of human cancer, activating tumor development and progression. However, the role of NPM in PanNETs is unknown.

Aim(s): The aim of the study was to assess NPM expression in PanNETs of different grades (G) and to determine its potential role as a prognostic and diagnostic marker.

Materials and methods: NPM expression was evaluated by immunohistochemistry using the monoclonal antibody EP11848Y on a panel of 27 resected well differentiated PanNETs, including G1, G2 and G3 neoplasms. The expression was correlated with clinicopathological data and prognosis.
