Plasma Somatostatin: Gastrin Ratio Improves the Diagnosis of Gastrinoma

#267

Introduction: Fasting gastrin alone is inadequate for diagnosis of gastrinoma. Diagnosis requires confirmation of low gastric pH. Low gastric pH is associated with increased numbers of D (somatostatin) cells.

Aim(s): To determine diagnostic utility of plasma somatostatin, gastrin and Cg A levels in patients with gastrinoma and atrophic gastritis.

Materials and methods: Plasma gastrin, somatostatin and CgA were measured in 21 patients with gastrinomas and 23 patients with achlorhydria secondary to atrophic gastritis referred to the Supra Regional Assay and Advisory Service Laboratory at Imperial College NHS Trust.
