The Carcinoid Syndrome Caused by Retroperitoneal Carcinoid Tumors

#255

Introduction: The carcinoid syndrome is caused by increased levels of serotonin and is mostly seen in cases of carcinoid tumor in the small bowel and liver metastases, as there is a very high first pass effect.

Aim(s): We describe two cases of carcinoid syndrome without liver metastases but with a single lesion secreting directly into the systemic circulation.

Materials and methods: Case 1: a 62-year-old woman presents with a 4 yr. history of diarrhea and flushing. A single lesion near the hepatoduodenal ligament is found on CT scan. Case 2: a 39-year-old woman presents with a 2 yr. history of abdominal pain and flushing. A single lesion is found near the left kidney. Both had elevated Chromogranin A but normal U-5HIAA.
