Thyroid Disturbances in Neuroendocrine Tumors: A Romanian Retrospective Study Abstract #915

Introduction: For the last decades, neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) was a large area of investigation.
Aim(s): We present thyroid pathology in NETs: nodules, function, autoimmunity.
Materials and methods: Study design: retrospective observational study (between 2008-2013) in NET patients. Exclusion criteria: medullar thyroid cancer. Endocrine assessment: TSH, Free T4, serum calcitonin, thyroid ultrasound, antithyreoperoxidase antibodies. Selected cases: thyroid fine needle aspiration, pathological and IHC exam.

#48 Preliminary report of the use of everolimus in a patient with progressive medullary thyroid carcinoma
Introduction: Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) accounts for about 5-10% of all thyroid cancers, and while disease localized to the thyroid can be cured by surgery, there is no effective treatment for disseminated MTC. Constitutive activation of the RET proto-oncogene is implicated in familial and a proportion of sporadic cases, and up-regulates the AKT/PI3-kinase/mTOR signal transduction pathway. Recent studies have shown that the inhibitor of mTOR, everolimus (RAD001, Novartis, Basel), can inhibit the proliferation of the TT cell line and human MTC tumor cells in vitro. Clinically, everolimus has been shown to attenuate the progression of some gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors, but its clinical use in MTC has not yet been evaluated.

#108 Everolimus (RAD001) induces tumor response in patients with medullary thyroid cancer: an in vivo and in vitro study
Introduction: Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is a neuroendocrine tumor (NET) of the thyroid C cells which is known to express somatostatin receptors. Octreotide, a somatostatin analogue exerting both antisecretory and antitumor activity in different types of NETs, has shown low efficacy in MTC. Everolimus (RAD001), an inhibitor of mTOR, has shown antitumor effects in patients with NETs and synergistic effects when combined with octreotide. Until recently, RAD001 has never been evaluated in MTC.
