Rectal Neuroendocrine Tumors: Long-Term Survival After Resection and Prognostic Factors

#599

Introduction: The rectum is the third most common location for gastrointestinal carcinoids after small bowel and colon. Due to their rarity, the characteristics and behavior of this unusual malignancy remain unclear.

Aim(s): To investigate the clinical symptoms, pathologic features, and survival of rectal neuroendocrine tumors (RNT) and analyze its prognostic factors.

Materials and methods: The clinical data of 57 RNT patients who were treated in the Cancer Hospital of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences from March 2004 to September 2009 were retrospectively analyzed. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed on the influences of gender, age, tumor size, pathologic type, TNM stage, and treatment on the prognosis.
