Small-Cell Carcinoma of the Gallbladder: Case Report and Review of Literature

#720

Introduction: Small-cell carcinomas arising in the gallbladder are extremely rare and aggressive tumors, which metastasize early, and have very poor prognosis. This histologic type of gallbladder carcinoma is more common in women than in men, usually coexists with lithiasis, and has a highly aggressive clinical behavior.

Aim(s): We present a well-documented case of small cell carcinoma of the gallbladder and review the literature on this unusual entity.

Materials and methods: A case of an 89-year-old man is reported, who presented with mild abdominal pain, bouncing sensitivity and weight loss. Ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) scans revealed a mass of the gallbladder with regional lesions in the liver. The patient underwent a directional diadermical liver biopsy.
