The Risk of Secondary Primary Colorectal Adenocarcinomas Is Not Increased among Patients with Gastroenteropancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors – A Nationwide Population Based Study

Introduction: It has been suggested that secondary primary colorectal adenocarcinomas (SPCA) occur more often than normal in patients with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs).

Aim(s): In a nationwide population based study, we investigated the risk of SPCA in GEP-NET patients and compared it to the general population.

Materials and methods: Using the nationwide Danish registries, we identified 3,019 GEP-NET patients (median age 63 (IQR 50-73), 53 % women) diagnosed in 1995-2010. We used Cox regression to compare the incidence of SCPA in GEP-NET patients relative to a gender- and age-matched general population sample of 59,775 persons.
