Morphological Factors Related to Nodal Metastases in Neuroendocrine Neoplasms of the Appendix. A Multicenter Retrospective Study

Introduction: Appendiceal NETs are usually diagnosed accidentally after appendectomy; the indications for right hemicolectomy are currently based on several parameters (tumor size, grading, Ki-67, localization, mesoappendiceal invasion, lympho-vascular infiltration). Available guidelines are based on scarce evidence inferred by small, retrospective, single institution studies.

Aim(s): The objective of our study was to evaluate clinical and morphological features related to nodal involvement in a large cohort of patients, in order to identify patients who should be referred for oncological radicalization with hemicolectomy.

Materials and methods: Patients who underwent surgical resection of appendiceal NETs at eleven tertiary Italian centers, from 1990 to 2015, were included in this retrospective analysis. Clinical and morphological data were analyzed in order to identify factors related to nodal involvement.
