Clinical Manifestations of Patients with Pancreatic ß Cells Hyperplasia

#428

Introduction: Pathologic hyperplasia of pancreatic endocrine cells is uncommon. ß cell hyperplasia contributes to persistent hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia. The manifestations of patients with pancreatic ß cells hyperplasia are variable and their preop. diagnosis is difficult.

Aim(s): We reported three patients with preoperatively suspected pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (NET), but their resected pancreatic specimens revealed only endocrine ß cells hyperplasia. We hope their clinical manifestations may provide some clues to diagnosing such an uncommon disease.

Materials and methods: Three adult patients, one male and two female, were admitted with a suspicious pancreatic neck or tail tumors. They complained of vague abdominal pain, anorexia, poor appetite, and body weight loss. Their serum CgA was high (324, 598, and 180 ng/ml individually), and their CT / MRI suspected a faint tumor in the pancreatic neck or tail. They had no significant hypoglycemia, except the third patient had a high insulin level (62.4 mU/L). Their preop. diagnoses were p-NET.
