Do metastatic appendiceal NETs ever develop metachronously after appendectomy or right hemicolectomy?
#4236
Introduction: Appendiceal NETs are typically detected incidentally during appendectomy. A recent study reported no cases of metachronous metastases among patients (pts) with primary tumors <2cm, regardless of lymph node status or completion hemicolectomy. Questions persist regarding the possibility of mets developing decades after surgery, particularly since appendiceal NETs are frequently diagnosed in young adults and children.
Aim(s): We sought to evaluate pts with metastatic appendiceal NETs to assess whether any had been diagnosed previously with an early stage appendiceal NET.
Materials and methods: We analysed a large institutional NET database to identify appendiceal NETs of all stages and ascertain whether any with localized tumors developed mets, and whether any with mets had originally presented with an early-stage tumor.
