Endocrine Paraneoplastic Syndromes in Patients with Neuroendocrine Neoplasms

Introduction: Endocrine paraneoplastic syndromes (ePNS) result from production of bioactive substances from tumours not related to their expected tissue of origin. Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) have been associated with ectopic secretion of several hormones, but the prevalence of ePNS has only been described in a small number of studies.

Aim(s): To assess ePNS prevalence in a large cohort of NEN patients treated in EKPA-Laiko ENETS Center of Excellence, Athens, Greece.

Materials and methods: Records from 704 patients (335 female) with NENs (655 sporadic/ 49 familial) were reviewed for the presence of ePNS: 128 gastric, 35 duodenal, 257 pancreatic, 76 small intestinal, 12 colon, 29 rectal, 47 lung, 2 thymic, 44 unknown primary origin (UPO) and 16 of various other origin (ovarian, prostate, larynx).
