Evaluation of Early Predictors of Metabolic Syndrome in Patients with Gastroenteropancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors (GEP-NET)


Introduction: Metabolic syndrome and obesity (MetS) are supposed to have a role in cancer but data analysing their association with GEP-NET are lacking.

Aim(s): Aim of this study was to explore the association of early predictors of MetS with GEP-NET, using as tools Fatty Liver Index (FLI), a predictor of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and Visceral Adiposity Index (VAI), a gender-specific indicator of adipose dysfunction.

Materials and methods: A cross-sectional case-control observational study was conducted. VAI and FLI were calculated in GEP-NET patients referred to the ENETS Center of Excellence of Naples, Endocrinology Unity of Federico II University between January 2015 and November 2019, as well as control healthy subjects, age, sex and BMI-matched. VAI is based on waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol levels. FLI is based on BMI, WC, triglycerides and GGT.
