Neuroendocrine Carcinoma (NEC) and Composite Exocrine-Neuroendocrine Carcinoma (CENEC) of the Stomach: A Clinicopathological Review of 58 Cases

#443

Introduction: NEC of the stomach is an uncommon tumor accounting for 0.5% of all gastric carcinomas and about 6% of gastric NETs. CENEC contain both areas of NEC and conventional carcinoma. The histological diagnosis is difficult.

Aim(s): To evaluate clinicopathological features and prognosis of NEC.

Materials and methods: The retrospective analysis of the pathologic reports from 1999 to 2011 has identified 58 cases of gastric NEC/CENEC. All samples have been newly examined by one pathologist using immunohistochemical (IHC) staining. CENECs with at least 30% of NE component were included. In total, 41 NEC and 17 CENEC were studied.
