Review of appendiceal neuroendocrine neoplasms and pathological features that influence decision for oncological right hemicolectomy

#3385

Introduction: Appendiceal neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) are typically an incidental finding with 80% diagnosed post-appendectomy in the setting of acute appendicitis. While ENETS recommends that patients with appendiceal NEN >2cm undergo right hemicolectomy (RH) there is uncertainty in how to manage those measuring 1-2cm.

Aim(s): To review the histopathological features of appendiceal NEN that underwent RH over a 12-year period in a national referral centre.

Materials and methods: A search of the laboratory information system using relevant SNOMED codes was performed and pathology reports of all appendiceal NEN were respectively reviewed. Clinicopathological details including patient age, tumor size, grade and presence of lymphovascular invasion (LVI) were collated.
