Small Bowel NET – Is it better to be diagnosed after long-term symptoms or acutely?

#3485

Introduction: NET patients present in many different ways and those with small bowel NET can have a particularly difficult journey to diagnosis. If this leads to a delayed diagnosis, does this also mean poorer survival and outcomes compared to those who present in another manner?

Aim(s): To examine the ways in which patients with small bowel NET present and achieve diagnosis and see if long-term symptoms are the predominant manner of presentation. By comparing the different categories of presentation could any conclusions be drawn as to survival and other outcomes?

Materials and methods: The records of all patients with NET first seen at this hospital in 2018 were examined, identified from the dedicated NET database. 80 had a final diagnosis of small bowel NET from a total of 207. This group was then examined looking at the method of presentation/diagnosis, whether or not they had surgery, disease at diagnosis and outcomes including death. This data was entered into a hospital approved data collection tool for further analysis.
