Sneak peek into neuroendocrine tumors (preliminary study) – Reconsideration of histopathological approach and classification

#3840

Introduction: Tumorlets and DIPNECH are rare entities often associated with bronchial neuroendocrine tumors and little is known regarding their clinical course and management. However, they are not uncommon findings on CT or MR imaging of patients with known bronchial NENs.

Aim(s): In this study, we evaluated the frequency of tumorlets and DIPNECH in patients with known bronchial NENs and attempted to determine if they had the same immunohistochemical characteristics as the primary tumor.

Materials and methods: FFPE tissue blocks from 38 patients were prospectively collected from patients undergoing resection for pulmonary neuroendocrine tumors at Thoracic Diseases General Hospital Sotiria between January 2021 and February 2022. In both the TC and AC groups, tumorlets and DIPNECH were detected in all patients when additional blocks and slides from normal lung parenchyma were examined.
