Günter Klöppel

The Life Achievement Award 2020 has been awarded to Günter Klöppel, Emeritus Professor and Consultant of Pancreatic and Endocrine Tumors at the Department of Pathology at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. He is distinguished for his many significant contributions to pathology of the pancreas as well as neuroendocrine tumors.
His most notable and important scientific contributions comprise research on neonatal nesidioblastosis, the precursor lesions of pancreatic carcinoma and their molecular progression, the description and classification of special pancreatic tumor types, the pathogenesis of alcoholic and autoimmune pancreatitis, and the genetics and classification of gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms.
Günter Klöppel is one of the first members of ENETS, was a member of the ENETS Advisory Board, and works as an auditor for the ENETS Centers of Excellence Programme. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Ferdinand Bertram Award of the German Diabetes Society, the Jühling Award, European Pancreatic Club Lifetime Achievement Award and the German Cancer Award for Clinical Research. He is Honorary Member of the European Society of Pathology, and Member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. He is a reviewer for several international journals and author/co-author of more than 500 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.
