First experience of laparoscopic treatment of organic hyperinsulinism

Introduction: Pancreatic laparoscopic surgery is the most promising type of surgery. In the case of varied benign pancreatic tumors, laparoscopic surgery can become a standard surgical procedure. Among these uncommon tumors, pancreatic insulinomas are mostly benign and solitary. Successful management of patients with insulinomas depends on accurate localization of the tumor and the use of appropriate surgical techniques.

Aim(s): To evaluate safety and effectiveness of laparoscopic enucleation of pancreas insulinoma.

Materials and methods: Three patients with diagnosis of organic hyperinsulinism underwent the laparoscopic enucleation of insulinoma (two females and one male). Two of these patients had a tumor in the tail of the pancreas and one in the body. All of the insulinomas were located on the anterior or anterolateral surface of the pancreas. Diagnosis with clear localization of insulinomas was installed before operation. Preoperative diagnostic protocol included laboratory tests (blood glucose level, insulin, C-peptide), abdominal ultrasound imaging, spiral contrast CT. Intraoperative details including operative time, total blood loss and postoperative events such as surgical complications, length of hospital stay and clinical outcome were assessed
