Merkel Cell Carcinoma in a Nine-Year-Old Girl

#634

Introduction: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) of the skin is a rare neuroendocrine tumor characterized by its rapid growth and aggressive clinical behavior. MCC is a typical tumor of older age (average age is 65 years). In children and adolescents less than 20 years of age, it is extremely rare. Information regarding MCC in childhood can be found in the literature only in the form of individual case reports. Due to the rarity of MCC in the young population, any clinical studies or treatment recommendations in these patients are missing.

Aim(s): We are presenting a 9-year-old girl with recurrent MCC with 11 years overall survival after treatment including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and differentiation therapy. According to our knowledge, it is most likely the 10th known case of Merkel cell carcinoma in the young generation and the fifth reported case of MCC under 15 years of age.

Materials and methods: Case report of 9-year-old girl with recurrent and metastatic MCC of the neck. Combined therapy (surgery, multiagent CHT, RT) + retinoids have been used.
