Need and challenges of developing a comprehensive neuroendocrine tumor dietetic service

#3362

Introduction: QEH Birmingham provides tertiary and quaternary specialist neuroendocrine tumor (NET) services to a 10 million population. Until August 2020 Specialist Dietetic resource was limited to one outpatient clinic per week meaning few patients had access to this service. Inpatients were seen by non-specialist dietitians or not at all.

Aim(s): A 2-year industry sponsored joint working project was commenced in August 2020. Its aim was to deliver a redesigned nutritional pathway, increase capacity and access to specialist dietitian to achieve improved patient function, quality of life and fitness for intensive therapies such as surgery, PRRT and chemotherapy.

Materials and methods: Since August 2020, 78 clinic slots have been made available each month. This is a significant uplift from the 24 clinic slots per month that were available previously. The specialist NET dietitian is also responsible for seeing any NET inpatients admitted to hospital.
