Pheochromocytomas manifested as a surgical emergency

Introduction: Pheochromocytoma is commonly diagnosed as an incidentaloma if asymptomatic or though the clinical manifestations of the disease including the triad of paroxysmal headaches, palpitations, and diaphoresis accompanied by marked hypertension. If symptomatic, pheochromocytoma may be manifested as a surgical emergency. These surgical emergencies can be lethal if not recognized promptly and treated appropriately.

Aim(s): This study aims to review surgical emergencies as manifestations of pheochromocytoma, aiming to increase awareness among surgeons.

Materials and methods: Electronic databases were searched with appropriate search terms up to and including November 2020.
