The Economic Impact to Patients with Neuroendocrine Tumours

#2713

Introduction: The quality of life impact on patients with neuroendocrine tumours (NETs) and the economic burden on health systems are substantial. However, little is known about the economic burden to individual patients and families for medical out-of-pocket expenses and employment decisions.

Aim(s): This study was performed to determine the extent and factors influencing the financial consequences of living with NETs and their effect on quality of life.

Materials and methods: We undertook an online cross-sectional survey using a targeted approach through NETs clinics and support groups. Australian Medicare claims data over the past four years were on appointments, tests, procedures and pharmaceuticals. Validated surveys measured health-related quality of life (EuroQol-5D-5L) and financial toxicity (COST), supplemented with questions on employment and retirement, insurance and out-of-pocket medical expenses. Generalised linear models were used in the analysis.
