Trends in Management of Gastro-Intestinal Neuroendocrine Tumors in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: The Contribute of a Case Series.

Introduction: The risk to develop gastro-intestinal malignancies is higher in patients affected by inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Apart from colo-rectal cancer, related to a long standing inflammation, there is a growing evidence of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) in these patients and a correlation between these two diseases has been postulated. We report four cases of NETs in IBD.

Materials and methods: The histologic parameters and the immunophenotype of the neoplastic lesions were assessed by an expert pathologist using A-chromogranin, synaptophysin, serotonin and somatostatin receptor (SSTR). The distribution of enteroendocrine cells in inflamed bowel mucosa was evaluated with chromogranin stain.
