Valvular surgery in carcinoid heart disease – Indications and outcome

#4152

Introduction: Neuroendocrine tumors (NET) can release biogenic amines that can induce a fibrotic process in the heart valves known as carcinoid heart disease (CHD). Valvular replacement surgery is the standard of care, but such interventions are associated with significant morbidity and valid criteria for both selecting patients (pts) and timing of surgery are limited.

Aim(s): To examine the results of valvular surgery in CHD patients, and explore patient related factors and biomarkers potentially modifying outcome.

Materials and methods: We identified 19 patients that had performed valvular replacement surgery due to CHD, who had been treated for NET at our department. Detailed echocardiographic recordings were available for 18 of these pts, and retrieved for expert review.
