Immunohistochemical analysis for galectin-3 and outcomes in medullary thyroid cancer
#4216
Introduction: Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a beta-galactoside involved in multiple biological and pathological processes including growth and differentiation, cellular adhesion and transformation, and metastatic potential.
Aim(s): The aim of our study was to investigate the potential prognostic role of Gal-3 expression in MTC.
Materials and methods: In our retrospective study, immunohistochemical expression of Gal-3 was studied in a cohort of 20 MTC and 3 C-cell hyperplasias (CCH) of the thyroid with a follow-up of at least 6 months. The enrolled patients were male and female, with an average age of 45.5 years. Immunohistochemical analysis (IHC) for Gal-3 was performed for all, and the results were compared with disease outcome parameters.
