Implementation of a new, nurse-led clinic (NLC) for neuroendocrine tumor (NET) patients

#4239

Introduction: There is international evidence supporting nurse-led services for people with chronic diseases in reducing hospitalisations, symptom improvement and lifestyle, and patient satisfaction. Patients with NET often have high symptoms burden and psychosocial distress in the context of indolent disease. Our centre recently implemented a (NLC) to provide complex care support for patients with NET.

Aim(s): To improve assessment and multidisciplinary care for patients with low/intermediate grade NETs.

Materials and methods: A NLC model was piloted over three phases: planning, implementation and evaluation. Eligibility included grade 1/2, non-FEG avid patients on watchful waiting or somatostatin analogues (SSA). NLC frequency was determined with supervising Medical Oncologist (e.g., 3/6 monthly) with medical review at least annually. Aspects included review of imaging, lab tests, symptoms, nutrition, SSA management and cardiac care as well as psychosocial review (including linkages to support organisations). Clinical escalation policies and pathways were established (e.g., significant changes in symptom profile, tolerance to therapies, abnormal lab results or other clinical concerns).
