Ki-67 (MIB-1) Proliferative Activity and Beta-Catenin Immunoexpression in Liver Metastases of Gastroenteropancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors

Introduction: Assessment of liver metastases biology features associated with cell proliferation and adhesion has a strong prognostic impact in patients with gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) neuroendocrine carcinomas.
Aim(s): The study was aimed at comparing GEP neuroendocrine carcinomas and their liver metastases for Ki-67 (MIB-1) labeling index and beta-catenin expression.
Materials and methods: GEP neuroendocrine tumors from 34 patients were evaluated: 34 primary; nine lymph nodes and 14 liver metastases. Immunohistochemistry was performed in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections of primary and metastatic tumors to determine Ki-67 (MIB-1) proliferation index and beta-catenin pattern of distribution (membranous, cytoplasmic or nuclear).
