Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and Tissue Inhibitors of Matrix Metalloproteinases (TMIPs) in GEP NET Patients – A Potential Prognostic Biomarkers for Metastases
#189
Introduction: MMPs have the ability to degrade the extracellular matrix and are responsible for tumor invasion and metastases. Higher TIMP-1 levels are associated with low survival rate in some types of cancer.
Aim(s): To analyze serum MMP-1, MMP-2, TIMP-1, TIMP-2 levels in GEP NET patients and determine their presence of metastases.
Materials and methods: Blood samples were collected from 62 GEP-NET patients (median age of 57.2 yrs) and from 31 healthy controls. Serum levels of MMP-1, MMP-2, TIMP-1, and TIMP-2 were assessed with the use of ELISA method (R&D System). The data was stored in an Access Database created by us. Statistical calculations were performed using MedCalc software.
