Mimics of Neuroendocrine Neoplasms Identified in a Single Consultation Center between 2009 and 2019

Introduction: Immunohistochemical expression of synaptophysin (SYN), chromogranin (CgA) and cytokeratin are essential for diagnosis of NENs. Non-NENs, however, may occasionally also express NE-markers and cytokeratin and cause diagnostic difficulties.

Aim(s): To identify non-NENs that morphologically, immunohistochemically and biologically mimic NENs.

Materials and methods: We reviewed 1676 neoplasms from our consultation archive, expressing at least one NE-marker. In cases with no straightforward diagnosis, the tumors were also screened for various NE-unrelated markers.
