Radiological follow-up (FU) in resected pulmonary typical carcinoids (pTC) – Do the benefits outweigh the risks?
#3867
Introduction: Primary resection is treatment of choice of pulmonary carcinoids (PC) and recurrences occur ~7% of TC and ~35% of atypical carcinoid (AC). Because of a risk of late recurrence, even in TC, long-term radiological FU is generally advised. As PC are frequent in relatively young pts, there is a risk of late radiation-induced cancer.
Aim(s): To calculate the cumulative radiation exposure per guideline in pts with TC to assess whether the benefits outweigh the risks in young pts.
Materials and methods: The frequency and modality of radiological FU according to ENETS, ESMO, and CommNETs-NANETS Guidelines was assessed. The radiation exposure per guideline and subsequently the percentage risk of fatal cancer induction was estimated using a sex and age averaged risk of 5%/Sv. Data from a Dutch nation-wide cohort (2003-2012, last FU 2020) of adults with resected PCs was used as reference.
