Somatostatinreceptor scintigraphy with Tc-99m-tektrotyd in patients with neuroendocrine tumors: correlation with immunohistochemistry

#56

Introduction: Somatostatin receptor scintigraphy (STRS) with Tc-99m-tektrotyd has been used in the past few years for diagnosis and staging of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). A number of clinicopathologic criteria proved to be useful predictors of malignant behavior of these tumors. Immunohistochemical markers for NETs include cell proliferation (Ki-67 index) and neuroendocrine markers such as chromogranin A (CgA) and synaptophysin.

Aim(s): To evaluate the correlation between results of Tc-99m-tektrotyd STRS and immunohistochemical markers in patients with NETS.

Materials and methods: Fifteen patients (8f, 7m; age 28-83 a) with NETs (G1, 9 patients; G2, 4 patients, G3, 2 patients, according to WHO Classification) were investigated for staging of disease before (five patients) or after (10 patients) surgery of primary tumor. Immunohistochemical stainings for Ki-67, CgA and synaptophysin were performed in biopsies and/or surgical specimens obtained from all patients. STRS was performed at 1-3h p.i. of Tc-99m-tektrotyd. All patients underwent whole-body scan and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/CT (low dose) imaging of thorax, abdomen and in selected cases of head and neck, as well.
