Expression of EGFR and IGF Pathway Genes in Insulinomas

#319

Introduction: Anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) therapy has been suggested in patients with inoperable/progressive endocrine pancreatic tumors (EPTs). However, various % EGFR-expressing EPTs are reported.

Aim(s): To examine the expression of EGFR and insulin-like growth factor (IGF) pathway genes in insulin-expressing EPTs (insulinomas).

Materials and methods: We determined EGFR, pERK and pAKT immunostaining by routine immunohistochemistry on paraffin-embedded tissue sections (181 EPTs, including 65 insulinomas). Furthermore, EGFR, ERK and AKT mRNA expression, as well as mRNA expression of IGF pathway genes (IGF, IGFR, InsR, IGFBP) were analyzed in 26 insulinomas and normal tissue by quantitative RT-PCR.
