Unusual Behavior of Gastric Carcinoid Type 1
#295
Introduction: Gastric carcinoids (GC) are rare tumors of the stomach. GC type 1 are associated with chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) and are the most benign type, having low metastatic potential.
Aim(s): Death from metastatic disease has been reported in only three patients in a review of 636 cases. We present a case of a man who died from metastatic GC type 1.
Materials and methods: In 1998, a 60-year-old man with type 2 diabetes mellitus was diagnosed as having pernicious anemia in CAG. An esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGDS) showed a well-differentiated GC, immunoreactive to antibody anti-CgA, Ki-67 index <2% with infiltration to submucosal tonic, of 1.2 cm, which was enucleated.
