#4017 Serum 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid is equivalent to 24-hour urinary 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid for the diagnosis of carcinoid syndrome

Introduction: Neuroendocrine tumors (NET) are characterized by their ability to secrete amines and peptides. Overproduction of serotonin results in the carcinoid syndrome (CS), present in approximately 20% of all NET patients. Measuring the main metabolite of serotonin, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), in 24-hour urine is frequently used for the diagnosis and follow-up of CS patients. However, these measurements are prone to sampling error and may be troublesome for patients. Serum 5-HIAA measurements might be a more reliable and convenient alternative in the diagnosis of CS.

#3750 The obesity paradox in patients with bronchial NENs in a single tertiary referral center in the United Kingdom

Introduction: In patients (pts) with lung cancer, there are multiple studies demonstrating obesity is significantly associated with improved overall survival (OS), this is known as the obesity paradox. It is unknown if this paradox exists in pts with bronchial NENs.

#3461 Gender specific differences in overall survival (OS) in patients with pulmonary neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) in a large United Kingdom (UK) tertiary centre

Introduction: Pulmonary NENs account for approximately 2% of all pulmonary malignancy. Overall survival data is mainly based on the USA SEER database or surgical cohorts, but data for the UK population is lacking. Only a few studies report on gender related outcomes and demonstrate no sex differences in overall survival.

Introduction: Neuroendocrine tumours of the thymus (thymic carcinoids) are a rare group of malignancies with a reported incidence of about 1 in 5 million. Over a ten year period in our institution, covering a population of 3.5 million, there had only been two confirmed cases.
