Introduction: Awareness of a potential global overtreatment by performing oncological resections for appendiceal neuroendocrine tumors (aNET) 1-2cm is increasing.

Keywords: appendix, neuroendocrine tumor, surgery, hemicolectomy, metastasis, survival,
Introduction: Ovarian carcinoid tumors are rare, often arising within a mature teratoma. No recent reevaluation of the immunophenotype of these tumors with new markers available has been performed.

#3381 Time to reclassify gastric carcinomas of diffuse type to neuroendocrine carcinomas
Introduction: The difference between adeno- and neuroendocrine carcinomas has been disputed for decades. Occurrence of neuroendocrine tumor cells in adenocarcinomas has been recognized, but the distinction between them has been made upon a certain number of tumor cells with a neuroendocrine marker. The number of positive cells depends upon the sensitivity of the method. Carcinogenesis generally results in loss and not gain of function. New gene expression of markers specific for a cell type seldom occurs.

Introduction: The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) is part of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signalling pathway which has a central role in the oncogenesis of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). Everolimus (EVE), an mTOR inhibitor, has shown effective in delaying progression of advanced NETs, but with a limited long-term efficacy, possibly due to a compensatory activation of the PI3K/AKT signalling. BYL719, a PI3K inhibitor, was shown to inhibit growth of several NET cell line models.

Keywords: NET cell lines, PI3K/Akt/mTOR signalling, Wnt signalling, everolimus, BYL719,
Introduction: Cancer stem cells (CSCs) represent a small subpopulation of tumour cells responsible for invasive tumour growth. Even though the presence of CSCs in neuroendocrine tumours is documented, their role in neuroendocrine tumourigenesis and metastasis is not defined as yet.
